Plastic-free Packaging for M&S in-store fresh sushi counters (2020)
Brief: Create a new range of plastic-free packaging for M&Sās in-store fresh sushi counters.
This was initially a very difficult project given the constraints:
- Fresh sushi needs to be seen (consumers shop with eyes)
- Coloured packaging options (Sushi sells best in black packaging)
- Plastic is generally needed for moisture and air permeability
- Needs to be easily assembled over the counter
- Client wants 5 skus to match current offering but needs to look different
- [Another silly deadline] to be ready in-store for 3 months time
OPTION A _ PAGODA was the concept chosen to go ahead for production trialling. (my favourite concept)
Artistically poised and eye catching, pagoda has quite a clever merits in its design. The tapered sides cue Asian cuisine and allow the base to nest for stack-ability and minimal assembly.
The clear lids made from die-cut and creased cellulose a material made from wood and therefore plastic free! (Note to designers: avoid PLA, as a material its not actually all that sustainable)
The lids ship flat-pack and are easily assembled; they can be secured with tabs, paper sleeve or stickers.
