[TCX] Thomas Cook Airlines
Meal Service Trayset (2018)
Thomas Cook UK needed a new 1/2 Atlas meal trayset [for economy & premium economy services] ideally using renewable products for launch in 2020 Summer to hit consumer trending demand of sustainable packaging.
I proposed two avenues:
- Rotable: generally injection moulded plastic
- Disposable: natural fibres which can be recycled or composted - which hit marketing trends of “this product is 100% sustainable/recyclable/compostable” type of claims".
Supposedly cabin crew favour the ease of disposable (chuck it all in a bin bag afterwards); also incinerating perfectly recyclable or compostable material is the grain of the aviation industry (CAT:2 waste).
Rotable (or reusable) product solutions have a longer shelf life of 8-12 reuse cycles and therefore deemed more sustainable however they’re logistically more demanding to wash, recover and replace for airline caterers, also they’re messier to clear away after between meal services.

The following were designed by interpreting the visual brand language of of TCX and contemporary styling of feasible modular solutions, in addition with existing component solutions (bringing tooling costs down).
Below are general renders of various traysets, components and from volume studies of meal proportioning vs portion size (g) vs compatibility of onboard stowage.
